Summer is my all-time favorite season! I have no business living here in New England where summer is about 2.4 seconds long. So, with Labor day weekend looming on my horizon I’m taking this opportunity to wear my white summer stuff. I know, I know, that ” no white after Labor day rule” is old and no longer worth listening too, but old habits die-hard my friends.
I’m just going to sit here and think more about these silly old fashion rules.
What are your thoughts on white shoes and such after Labor Day? I’d really love for you all to talk me out of it.

I know what you mean about the white. I just can’t wear white shoes after Labor Day — I think it’s because once it’s September there’s that autumn chill in the air and stark white has a cooling vibe to it… Plus, white shoes scream summer to me and we New Englanders aren’t going to put up with some delusional fashionista making us feel colder than we already are. LOL! Break out those warm autumnal shades and let’s all huddle together to keep warm. 😉
That said, I will wear a white shirt/sweater in the winter, it’s just the shoes — no can do.
Like you I observe these rules- not in a hard in fast way- but I’ll be honest some rules exist for a reason. Stark white on the stompers in rain and mud are impractical and bright brights don’t look right to me after Fall hits. You are wearing a perfect transitional outfit here, Doreen. Cooler weather will offer you the opportunity to trade your sweet white platforms (which I LURVE) into a pair of weathered leather boots. Fall is my favorite time to dress up. I’ve been thinking a lot lately and have had several surprising insights. Looking at this post yielded another. It is this: you are naturally feminine. I hope that doesn’t sound tautological or trivial. To me, the quality you display is a very wonderful attribute which is not as common as people believe. I believe it is why you carry off pretty dresses and feminine clothes so well. They magnify what you already have. As I have learned, clothes can’t create something that isn’t there.
Yes, I am very very girlie, and always have been. On the masculine to feminine spectrum, I’m pretty far to the “girlie girl” side. I think that what one wears does have an effect, as I suspect I look MORE feminine in a dress then in jeans and a tee shirt, but I hear and totally agree with what you are saying.
On another note, if I ever say anything that seems off or hurts your feelings, do not hesitate to smack me in the head. M’Kay?!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing white after Labor Day! I don’t even know where that rule came from, but I think it is stupid. Embrace the white!!

Oh goodness the shape of that dress is just perfect. And stripes? It’s a little bit of heaven.
I don’t wear white shoes or pants, but I do like to wear my white skirts during the winter paired with black tights. I think it’s sort of fun to wear a color during a season it’s not expected.
Yep – I agree, white shoes are getting packed away, but I might try and sneak out the pants and skirts just to shake it up. I’m wild like that.
You know, I used to think the same way regarding no white after Labor Day, but after seeing the piece Bill Cunningham did in The New York Times earlier this year, showing women wearing winter white, I’m keeping my summer white pants in my rotation until it starts to feel like fall. In NYC that is usually not until October.
And about Linda Fargo, isn’t her hair the most beautiful shade of silver? I love it!
